First of all,early attempts on classification of Antarctic soils are briefly summarized in the paper.Then,progresses in classifying the soils in the maritime Antarctic respectively within the frames of the Soil Taxonomy and the World Reference Base for Soil Resources are outlined.Meanwhile,a preliminary attempt is made to classify the soils in the same region in line with the Chinese Soil Taxonomy.It is indicated that all of the main soil types in the studied area within the maritime Antarctic can be grouped into Gelisols of the Soil Taxonomy.Comparatively,application of the WRB System and the Chinese Soil Taxonomy in classifying the soils in the maritime Antarctic seems to be much more difficult.
