The effects of kept bolt height on yield and quality of R. tanguticum1. Maxim.ex Balf and on soil moisture were studied in Gannan plateau area by the single factor randomized block. The results showed that when R. tanguticum1. Maxim. ex Balf bolt was cut before flower in July and 10 cm bolt kept, the water consumption was the smallest, economic characteristics such as the root length, the root diameter, root dry weight per plant and yield were the highest, and the yield were increased by 14.07% (P＜0.01) compared to the control, and the quality was also the best. Water use efficiency of 15 cm bolt kept was the highest and reached 1.43 (kg/(mm·hm2) in September. The optimal height of stalk kept was 10 ~ 15 cm because it not only saved water, but also increased yield and quality.
